Google Business Profile Setup Guide

Get Found on Google in 30 Minutes (For Real)

Your competitors are stealing your customers because they show up on Google and you don't. Let's fix that – no tech skills required.

Here's why this matters

Sarah's toilet is overflowing. She grabs her phone and searches "plumber near me." Three plumbers pop up on Google Maps.

Two have photos, reviews, and say "Open now."
The third one? Just a name and number.

Guess who's not getting that call?

Seriously, Google doesn't charge for this

Before you start, grab these things:

This'll take 5 minutes to gather and save you 20 minutes of hunting later:

  • Your exact business name (like it's written on your sign)

  • Your address (or the areas you serve)

  • A local phone number that actually rings

  • Your hours (including lunch breaks if you take them)

  • A few decent photos of your business

  • A quick description of what you do

Quick tip

Skip the 1-800 number if you have a local one. People trust local businesses more, and Google knows it.

Step 1: See If You're Already on Google

First things first – Google might have already created a basic listing for your business. Let's check.

Quick search:

Here's what you might find:

Nothing shows up?

Perfect! You get to start fresh. Jump to Step 2.

Your business is there but says "Claim this business"?

Google made a basic listing for you. Skip to Step 3 to claim it as yours.

Someone else already verified it?

This happens sometimes (former employee, marketing company, etc.). You'll need to request ownership – I'll show you how.

Cool, You're on Google Now. But...

Here's what happens next:

Mrs. Johnson finds you on Google. Great! Then she checks your Facebook to see if you're legit. Your last post? "Happy Thanksgiving 2019!" 🦃

Meanwhile, your competitor posted yesterday.

Guess who gets the call?

Step 2: Create Your Google Business Listing

Alright, you're not on Google yet. Let's fix that:

1. Head to business.google.com

Hit the big "Manage now" button to get started.

2. Type your business name

Here's the thing – type it EXACTLY like it appears on your sign. Don't get cute with keywords.

  • ❌ "Bob's Best Plumbing Services Dallas TX Affordable"
  • ✅ "Bob's Plumbing"

Google will straight-up punish you for keyword stuffing. Keep it real.

3. Pick your category

Start typing what you do and Google will suggest options. Be specific:

  • ❌ "Business" (what does that even mean?)
  • ✅ "Emergency plumbing service" (now we're talking)

Example description that actually works:

"Family-owned roofing company in Dallas since 2005. We fix leaks, replace old roofs, and handle insurance claims for storm damage. Free estimates, 24/7 emergency service. Call us before your small leak becomes a big problem."

Step 3: Prove You're the Real Deal (Verification)

Google needs to make sure you're not some random person claiming to own Bob's Plumbing. Fair enough.

They'll give you a few options:

📱 Phone or Text (instant)

They call or text right away. Answer, punch in the code, boom – verified. This is the way.

📧 Email (if they already know you)

Sometimes Google already has your info from somewhere. Check your email, click the link, done in 5 minutes.

📹 Video (1-3 days)

Record a quick video showing your storefront, maybe wave your business license. Upload it, wait a bit. Not bad.

📬 Postcard (ugh, 2 weeks)

Last resort. They mail you a postcard with a code. Takes forever. Do this only if nothing else works.

Hot tip: If you get multiple options, always pick phone or email. Why wait two weeks for a postcard when you could be done in 2 minutes?

Step 4: Add Photos (This is Where Most People Mess Up)

Listen, businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks. So yeah, this matters.

The photos you actually need:

  • Your storefront

So people can find you ("Oh, it's next to the Starbucks")

  • Inside your business

Clean and professional (hide the mess first)

  • Your team

People buy from people, not businesses

  • Your actual work

    Before/after pics are gold

  • Your logo

    For the profile pic

📸 Photo tips that actually matter

Your phone camera is totally fine. Natural light is your friend. Show your real space (even if it's not perfect). People connect with real businesses, not glossy perfection.

Step 5: Get Your First Reviews (Without Being Weird About It)

Empty review sections scream "new business" or "sketchy." Let's fix that.

First, grab your review link:

  1. In your Google dashboard, click "Reviews"
  2. Hit "Get more reviews"
  3. Copy that short link

Now, text your favorite customers:

"Hey Sarah, thanks again for choosing us for your kitchen remodel. Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? Takes 30 seconds: [your link]"

Thanks!

- Bob

That's it. No begging, no bribes (that's actually against Google's rules), just a simple ask.

⚡ Lightning round tips:

  • Reply to EVERY review within 24 hours (yes, even the bad ones)
  • Thank people by name in your response
  • For negative reviews, stay professional and offer to fix the problem
  • Never offer discounts for reviews (Google will catch you)

Look, Here's the Deal

You just spent 30 minutes setting up Google so customers can find you. Awesome.

But if they find dead social media, they'll call someone else anyway.
